Mr. Overcash, Let’s Clear the Air!

Request A Public Hearing on Titan’s Air Permit.

Titan (Carolina Cement) submitted their draft air permit application in February. The air permit is still under review at the N.C. Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR). There will be a 30-day public comment period at the end of the application period where people can share their concerns about all issues relating to the air permit. This is important, but it would be even better to get our concerns heard now, while the permit is under review. And maybe we can!

We recently learned that citizens can request a public hearing to discuss their concerns with NCDENR while the air permit is under review. So make that request now to Director Keith Overcash (contact info below). A request for public hearing is not always granted. It depends on how many people request it and the reasons given for the request. DENR officials tell us Titan is pushing hard to expedite the permit process. Let’s push back! Please send an email or letter to Mr. Overcash and let him know you would like to request a public hearing in our area to discuss your concerns regarding Titan Cement’s (Carolina Cement) draft air permit application. State in your email or letter what you are concerned about (mercury, particulate matter, hydrochloric acid, the size of this plant, the cumulative effects this plant’s pollution will have on you–given the area’s already high rankings in mercury, chromium, SO2, NOx and particulate matter). Our voices will be more effective during the review process instead of at the end. Please take a moment to request a public hearing on the air permit and thank you for doing your part to clear the air in the Cape Fear Region!

    Hi Joel,

I am one of the student members of UNCW ECO……who put the website online. I have just finished making a movie about the proposed plant. With your permission, I would like to put it up on the ECO website ASAP. I have taken some wording verbatim from stoptitan.org, but have cited this source at the end of the video.

Please get back to me as soon as you can. Perhaps I can get your email?

    Thanks,

    David

David, The public scoping meeting has been changed to July 1, at 6 pm, at Wilmington Christian Academy/Grace Baptist Church, 1401 North College Road (see http://stoptitan.org/comment-season-opens-for-army-corps-and-titan-speak-up/ for what you can do to contribute to that vital part of the process). We need hundreds of people at this meeting. Per your request for permission for your movie, can you contact us directly at contactus@stoptitan.org? Thanks!

Has anyone seen some of the latest technology in the works that shows just how much the dirty technology of today is NOT the way forward?
