The Fishermen's Wing of Stop Titan

While we still can, we had a beautiful paddle yesterday on Island Creek, which is a creek of the Cape Fear river directly adjacent to the Ideal Cement plant / Titan cement property. On the way out there, on the corner of Highway 17 and 210, we saw this fantastic, giant banner about the effects of Titan this close to fishing, recreation, residences.

This just goes to show you how contradictory and out of touch our state government is. While they are supporting polluting our waters with more toxins they spend millions of our taxpayers money on a campaign for us to purchase seafood caught in NC. Does this make sense to anyone? If I were in the commercial fishing business I would be at Raleigh demanding an explanation.

Deborah Butler  - Candidate for County Commissioner     |2010-01-08 04:16:02
Dear Fisherman's Wing of StopTitan:

In the coming days, I will be announcing my candidacy for the County Commission of New Hanover County. I have been an opponent of Titan and was a speaker at the most recent DAQ public hearing. I invite you to view my website www.rundebrun.com to further explore my opinion of Titan. I believe that the work you are doing is terrific. I support you fully and my goal in the coming months is to earn your vote and support. Thank you. Deborah Butler.

I am a resident of North Carolina and wish to express my support for the proposed Carolinas Cement plant to be built in Castle Hayne, N.C. I supported the issuance of their Draft Air Permit and I support the issuance of the official Air Permit without delay. I do not ask that you change the rules, but treat Carolinas Cement the same as other applicants.

I have done my research and I know Carolinas Cement and its parent company, Titan America LLC, to be organizations of great integrity with an excellent reputation for community involvement and environmental stewardship. I trust that current federal and state regulations will protect our health and safety. We, in North Carolina, are in desperate need of the jobs, revenue and taxes this project will generate. Additional information about the project is available at www.carolinascement.com.

Carolinas Cement is entitled to equal treatment under the law and due process. I urge you to issue the Air Permit to Carolinas Cement without delay.

It is very exciting to find such a concerned group who are so pure in their beleifs that they have stopped using cement altogether because it is such a horrible pollutant. Kudos to all of you for taking such a strong stand. You have realized that the only way to remove all of these pollutants from the environment is to remove the demand for the product. Certainly you wouldn't want to encourage the pollution levels in another neighborhood by buying these anti-environment products for use in your own area. May everyone observe the fine watchdogs of New Hanover County with your straw and mud homes, schools and doctors offices. I look forward to the opportunity to bring my family to your fine area. When I see you riding horses down dirt roads and rebuilding your hand hewn lumber homes I will proudly teach my children about people with values. People who recognized that those who consume and use these products are as guilty as the polluting, price fixing, baby poisoning industries who make them. I am sure the pictures of the fish company and its conrete building and concrete loading docks has been planted by a Titan Executive. Please make sure to remove their propganda from your website. Also the pictures of the children drinking river water out of styrofoam cups while riding around in plastic canoes are so obviously fake that they must have been placed here by some corrupt EPA officials looking to undermine your efforts as they risk their jobs and reputations to hide their obvious involvement in this scandal. Remember, all of these products are made in someone's backyard. If only the whole world recognized this simple point like the owners of this website and stopped using the products, I too could let my children drink from the river. Thank you, oh sentries of the world.

These are funny comments, Awe Struck. Good stuff. But the post you chose as a target for your snarkiness undermines the point of your sarcasm in an important way:

Not all sites for manufacturing the things we need are the same. Some, like the one proposed on the river in Castle Hayne, above Wilmington, in one of the densest counties in the state, near other (regional) cements plants, near the ocean and the fisheries, fisherman, fishing areas and fragile, maxed-out ecosystems of the Cape Fear area, are particularly harmful, and to a particularly large segment of the population. Fisherman and thousands of other residents who provide for us and make their livelihood from resources other than limestone are reminding us this here.

I've made my peace with the fact that I do not want the Titan cement plant "in my backyard" but ride around on roads. Here's how: Contrary to what you're implying, we don't need more cement. And we don't need cement manufacturing here. Demand for cement all over the world has plummeted and is still going down.

Great work on that fish-flavored cement food you've designed! Glad you figured out how to dispense with clean air and breathe S02
