- New Group Stages Rally Against Titan—Feb. 1!
- Titan Investigation Hits Front Page of News & Observer!
- 20 Months and still NO Permits!
Join the StopTitan bandwagon for a rally on Monday, Feb. 1, 4:45 to 6:30 pm, at the New Hanover County Courthouse (Princess and Third Streets) to show your opposition to Titan Cement. Use this Ground-Hog’s Day Eve to remind our current New Hanover County Commissioners that Big Cement comes with a Big Shadow that could come back to haunt them on Election Day in November. Bring signs, friends, and your finest red shirts and dresses for all to see. It’s been nearly two years since our community first learned of the Titan’s plans to destroy thousands of acres of our wetlands, mine above our major source of drinking water, and pollute our air with mercury, lead, arsenic and a host of other toxic air pollutants. Public opposition to the project continues to grow daily. A hard-working local grass roots effort, called Citizen’s Against Titan, has collected more than three thousand signatures of people who oppose Titan in just the past few months. The group will present their petition to the County Commissioners after the rally. Other speakers from the Titan opposition will be on hand as well to make one point very clear: We don’t want Titan Cement in our Community! Titan’s shenanigans to avoid a State Environmental Policy Act review—one of our toughest environmental laws—made front page fodder for the Raleigh News & Observer on the 19th. The story tracks emails that show Titan officials went to great lengths to avoid SEPA, and to hide any suggestion that the Castle Hayne site was the only one being considered—to make them eligible for more of our tax dollars. And watchdogs like Blue NC are covering the coverage! The Southern Environmental Law Center and the Duke Environmental Law Clinic—who represent local environmental and citizens groups—have challenged the SEPA decision in Wake County Superior Court. The case is still pending, and we’ll keep you updated on any developments there. There are a lot of demands for your dollars this month, as daily reports from Haiti make all too clear. This month, in lieu of donations to us, please send your donations to the charity of your choice to provide much needed help for the people of Haiti. After that, if you still feel so inclined, you can send a few dimes our way and we’ll put them to good use fighting for a better future for our families, our community, and our kids.
