  • Rally In the Alley! ...
  • News & Observer says SEPA should apply to Titan!....
  • Growing Group of Businesses/leaders and Community members concerned about Titan Cement! Join the List!!!!.....
  • See a Cement Plant and Quarry for yourself...
  • Titan's Florida Mining Permit Revoked As Company Wooed Commissioners!...
Don't Forget to put your red shoes (shirt, dress, kilt, whatever) on, paint your sign, and head on down to the New Hanover County Courthouse (Third and Princess Sts.) on Monday, February 1st, at 4:45 pm for the Citizens Against Titan Rally before the County Commissioners Meeting at 6:30, where members of our community will submit a petition with nearly 5,000 signatures of folks who oppose Titan Cement!  Titan's flacks love to say we're a "small vocal minority." Even though the News & Observer's editorial last week more accurately described us as "considerable  local opposition" -- and endorsed our view that SEPA should apply! Bring all your friends, neighbors, kids, whomever you can cram in your car to remind the County Commissioners that the only thing small in this fight is the support for Titan Cement. AND WE VOTE!

So just who is concerned about the impacts of the Fourth Largest Cement Plant in the Nation on our local air, waters, wetlands, and public health? Check out our new list of Who's Concerned About Titan Cement! It includes:
  • More than 50 local, regional, state and national citizens groups
  • The new Cape Fear Economic Development Council
  • 25 University groups and academics
  • 13 local, state and federal governmental agencies
  • 15 local fisheries-related businesses
  • 4 local newspapers/magazines and the two largest newspapers in the state, as well as our own Big Talker, Curtis Wright.
  • Our entire slate of local state representatives, as well as several city council members and County commissioners, and several candidates for upcoming seats!
  • 251 local doctors, 135 other health care providers, and the NC Pediatric Society!
  • Dozens of local businesses and business leaders, including Wilmington 2.0's Tom Looney!
The list of those concerned about Titan is growing longer every day! If you'd like to add your name or that of your business to the list, please This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it and we'll git 'er done!

And if you haven't seen it before, check out this nifty--if alarming--computer-generated &NR=1">flyover of the Cupertino cement plant and mine near San Francisco produced by EarthJustice with satellite imagery from GoogleEarth. Keep in mind that Titan's proposed limestone mine in Castle Hayne is four times larger than the Cupertino quarry!

Also check out the latest article in the Lumina News, that reveals Titan's Florida mining permit was revoked because of suspected groundwater contamination to Miami's water supply at the same time they were telling our county commissioners what good environmental stewards they were--so they could get $4.2 million of our tax dollars in incentives!

Apparently, there are suckers born every minute. And some even get elected to public office.

See you tomorrow at the Courthouse!

Titan says it needs the air quality permit so it can begin to buy long lead time, expensive equipment. This is utter nonsense. That presumes they already are guaranteed approval by the Army Corps of Engineers (ACE)!

Why else would they spend enormous sums if ACE could turn them down? That does not make sense. It is about as dumb as NH County Commissioners giving them $4.2 million to build a plant Titan already planned to build! They must already have ACE in their pockets, just like DENR and the County Commissioners.

I am against Titan and want the NHC commissioners to reverse there decision
on Titan Cement.Castle Hayne already has enough chemical and Nuclear plants to kill everyone in the county. We don't
need more.
