Friends and neighbors,
Thanks for showing your concern for our air, water, and public health by signing up for StopTitan.org updates and signing our petition. Now here’s your chance to stand up in person and let your presence—and opinion—be known!
The New Hanover County Commissioners have agreed to give us 15 minutes this Monday, June 2, to present new evidence from experts at UNCW and the medical community, among others, on the potential impacts of a massive new cement plant and limestone mine on our county.
Though they have been inundated by your emails, the commissioners so far have only seen a dozen or so concerned citizens who have been able to make it to their morning meetings in person. So send out emails to everyone you know, fill your car with as many friends or family members as it will hold, and come help chart a new course for your county! Remember, democracy is not a spectator sport, and nothing makes politicians pay attention like a courthouse full of informed and concerned voters. So pack the halls! Parents bring your kids if you can for a civics lesson they won’t forget since they are the citizens most at risk.
What: New Hanover County Commissioners Meeting
When: Monday, June 2, 6 pm to 8 pm
Where: New Hanover County Courthouse, 24 North 3rd Street, downtown Wilmington
Direction: South on Market; Right on 3rd St. Go one block. The historic red brick New Hanover County Courthouse is on the right with clocktower.

If anyone can find a digital copy (.pdf) of the 4/21/08 commissioners minutes please post a link. Here is a link to the 4/21/08 agenda where the item was acted upon:

Notice public comment on the item was scheduled at 9:55am, on Monday morning no less. Maybe I just can’t find the minutes from that date but I find it odd that they wouldn’t be published more than a month later. I would be interested to know how many public comments they received and if SELC was present at the meeting.
Thank you in advance.
I feel that Titan will create more problems for the community than it will help. We should keep in mind the polution and traffice which we do not need.
How upsetting that this huge pollutant could be so close to the new school being built outside Castle Hayne. Money seems to be everyone’s god. What about our kids health and future? They should be our priority! Do any of the cty commissioners had kids or grandkids to think about?
We DO NOT need more jobs at the expense of our food, air, and health, I am firm believer of an organic way of life and local produce , and a member of Tidal Creek co-op . Not to mention what this would do to our children s future and everybody’s health in general . it would be not only a step backwards , it would an ecological disaster ! and using our tax money ! I don’t think so, what are we thinking ? I moved to this area because of its natural beauty and charm , lets not ruin it .
Stephen Carpenter, To the best of my understanding, 10 people spoke against (there were others that were opposed that did not speak). Also, SLEC was not there.
can’t find the place to vote against it, please send, thanks, mary ann caws
Hi Mary Ann,
The best thing we can suggest now is to contact DAQ (Div. of Air Quality) using the email we prepared on the home page. (Directed to Mr. Keith Overcash). The email will also go to several elected officials as well as EPA Region 4 Administrator. DAQ is planning on issuing Titan’s draft air permit soon. We, as citizens, need to let our elected officials, esp. Gov.-elect Perdue and our State Representatives know we oppose Titan’s cement plant. A phone call or letter works great as well. If this doesn’t answer your question please let us know. Thank you.
